DISPO-GARDE
We hold these things to be true:

1. The best camera is the one you have with you.

2. Life generally happens at shutter speeds of 1/100s and over.

3.
a) Film is closer to truth than digital. Film is silver rearranged by light. It is not robots trying to see.
b) You don’t have to tell the truth.

4.
a) The best photographer in America right now is probably a 16 year old in West Virginia.
b) While shooting rolls of film is ultimately cheaper, the initial cost and research of finding and buying a camera is discouraging to 16 year olds in West Virginia.
c) Fujifilm disposables are available for $15-18 across the country, which is what almost all of the photos in this project were shot on. I used the student membership and then free versions of Adobe Lightroom for post and Google Slides for the collages.

5. Dispos are mechanically near-infallible. I have been through hundreds and never worried about things like scratching the lens, accidentally exposing the film, or dropping them in mosh pits, dance floors, drum kits, backpacks, the Long Island Sound, and once, the Joe DiMaggio Memorial Highway.

6. No one takes you seriously with a disposable camera, and when no takes you seriously, you can pretty much do whatever you want.

7. You can take great photos with a disposable camera. You can take photos that really MEAN SOMETHING TO YOU, photos that CHANGE YOUR LIFE, photos that BREAK YOUR HEART, photos that DON’T FUCKING COME OUT.
